What a buyer should know
What the energy system actually means
The MODX 70 is best read as a sailing catamaran with an unusual rig, not as a battery boat. The 110-nautical-mile motoring range at 5 knots is what the 250 kWh bank buys on its own; the point of the wing sails, the solar array and hydrogeneration is that the pack is meant to be refilled under way rather than run down. On a boat used the way it is designed to be used, the battery figure is a reserve, not the range. Owners who intend to motor most of the time will find the numbers modest for a 21-metre vessel.
Who it suits
Charter operators and owners with a genuine commitment to low-emission operation, who are willing to work with wind and to accept an automated rig with more mechanism than a conventional sailplan. It is not a boat for anyone who wants to press a throttle and arrive.
Caveats, and they are substantial
This is a prototype shown at Cannes 2026, not a production boat with a delivery history. Displacement is stated as 30 tonnes by MODX but reported at 23 tonnes by Multihulls World — a seven-tonne discrepancy on a vessel whose entire case rests on efficiency, and it must be resolved before any performance claim is taken at face value. There is no published price. Treat this as a project to be evaluated with a surveyor and a lawyer, not a catalogue purchase.
